We can see an example of this in scripture, when the people wanted to condemn the woman caught in adultery. The scripture tells us that they were all convicted from the eldest to the youngest.
“And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst (John 8: 9)”.

That was a supernatural conviction, and every one of them experienced it from the eldest to the youngest. The order of conviction shows us that this was supernatural. They all left, and left the woman alone with Jesus.
In the book of Acts, Peter was preaching, there was conviction, and the people responded. The scripture tells us that they were pricked in their heart and asked “what shall we do”.
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [k]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call (Acts 2: 36-39)”
In the book of First Samuel, we can also read the account where David cut off Saul’s skirt. The scripture tells us that his heart smote him, another version says that his heart troubled him, while another version of the bible says that his conscience bothered him(1 Samuel 24 5 8). These different phrases are all ways to say that David had a conviction.
David acted on it and he did not allow his servants to kill Saul. David left the battle in the hands of the Lord, and he did not interfere with Saul’s pending judgment (1 Chronicles 10: 13).
Do you have a witness about anything? Do you have a conviction about something? Is your heart troubling you? Is your conscience bothering you? Then it is time to act on it.
The Lord is calling your attention to something that needs a response. The wise act on the convictions of their hearts.
