Taking Our Eyes off Ourselves!

Life sometimes comes with challenges and if care is not taken, we can get so caught up in what we are going through and not notice other people’s possible needs around us.

Joseph is a prime example that choose to take his eyes off himself. From scripture, we can see that despite what he was going through, he looked out for others. Very commendable.

The account of Joseph can be found in Genesis 37-50.

Joseph did no wrong. Firstly, his brothers sold him ( Genesis 37), then his master’s wife lied on him, and Joseph was thrown into jail (Genesis 39).

But do you know that Joseph maintained a good attitude and he still cared about the welfare of those around him?

Joseph noticed that two of the king’s prisoners were sad:

“ Then the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, had a dream, both of them, each man’s dream in one night and each man’s dream with its own interpretation. And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were [a]sad,  So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in the custody of his lord’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?” (Genesis 40: 5-6)”.

Jospeh could have overlooked their sadness but he asked why they were sad. If Joseph had just focused on himself he probably may have missed God’s escape route. We don’t know.

Did you know that Joseph interpreting the Butler’s dream was what eventually got him out of prison, and he became second in command over Egypt overnight?

Yes, the Butler did forget Joseph for two years, but when he did remember, that got Joseph out of prison. Joseph ended up giving the king the interpretation of his dream.

Suppose Joseph was so engrossed in himself, and chose to ignore the Butler when he was sad, and could not be bothered to use his gift of interpretation of dreams because he was going through his own stuff.

How careful we need to be.

Yes, it takes grace and walking in the spirit, but by the grace of God, we need to learn to yield to the empowering of the Holy Spirit and focus on the Lord during difficult times, and maintain good works.

We have no idea what the Lord many use to bring us out from what we are going through.

In addition to that, the Lord rewards our sacrifices.

Be encouraged!.
