Learning to Forgive Yourself

The Lord is always faithful to forgive us, and we must be faithful to forgive ourselves.

David is a good example for us as he had to forgive himself. We know the sin that David committed because of Bathsheba. Yes, David paid a heavy price for what he did. We can see the consequences of his sin in the book of Second Samuel (2 Samuel 12: 10-15), but he was forgiven and David forgave himself.

If David did not receive the forgiveness of the Lord and forgive himself there are many other things we may have never have heard about again.

Did you know that the same Bathsheba gave birth to Solomon? The scripture also tells us that the Lord loved Solomon (2 Samuel 12 24). Solomon’s wisdom and riches exceeded all the kings of the earth (1 Kings 10: 23). In addition to that, Bathsheba still had other children for David (1 Chronicles 3: 5).

What a merciful God we serve. This is not a licence to sin, for David did pay a heavy price for his sin. We also need to remember that one reason Jesus came was for sin (Romans 8: 3). So we do not take sin lightly, but when we do sin, we ask the Lord for forgiveness and we must also forgive ourselves.

If David did not forgive himself, we may not have had the book of Proverbs as Solomon wrote the book. If David did not receive the love of God, we may not have had an account of how the Lord loved Solomon and blessed him with riches and wisdom.

Can we see why we have to drop things, forgive ourselves, and let things go?

We have to learn to receive the love of the Lord, and we must forgive ourselves.

The Lord wants to still bless us beyond our mistakes or wrongdoing.

While David’s sin is an extreme case in the natural, the point of this article is that when we ask the Lord to forgive us, we must forgive ourselves.

The Lord still wants to bless.

We still have a destiny in Christ that the Lord wants to unfold for us, provided we cooperate.

Have you done anything wrong?

Do you have past regrets?

You have asked the Lord to forgive you.

Forgive yourself and keep on moving. Receive the Lord’s mercy and love.

The Lord has great plans for you.
