The Power of Patience: Lessons from Unripe Pears

I recently visited a friend’s place and I was given a few unripe pears. Or, to put it more accurately, I took three unripe pears with their permission.

When you looked at the pears that I took, it was almost like “why bother”, they can’t be eaten, so what’s the point. But l still took them anyway.

I got back from the trip and left them. In the process of time, they ripened, and the pears were so delicious. I actually wished l had taken more than three.

I recently had a thought and learned a great lesson about how the once unripe pears, through time, became ripe and delicious.

It takes time for fruit to become a pleasure to those around us. We need to be patient with others while their fruit is still maturing.

How patient we need to be with each other. The scripture says that “ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [g]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law (Galatians 5: 22-23)”.

We also need to be patient with ourselves as we yield to the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

The concept of fruit is a kingdom principle.

The scripture tells us “ And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not “ (Galatians 6:9). That looks like fruit.

The scripture also speaks about the fruit of our labour (Philippians 1 2), it could be prayer, don’t give up. You will see the manifestation of the fruit soon.

The scripture uses the word “fruit” for a reason, implying that it is a process that takes time.

I wish I had taken more than three pears; I would have enjoyed them even more.

Figuratively, we reap what we sow, so the more we sow, the more fruit we will enjoy.

In the area of speaking, the concept of fruit is also a principle.

“ Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof (Proverbs 18 21).

As we have already discussed, it takes time for ripe fruit to manifest; that is why we must be careful about what we say and be diligent in speaking where we are going, because it can take time for the fruit to mature.

So be patient with others.

Be patient with yourself

And keep doing what needs to be done because we will reap if we do not faint.

God is faithful, and His grace is available for us.

While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease (Genesis 8:22).

Be encouraged!

Thanks for that thought, Bisi. Very encouraging. (But if you’d taken 20 pears and they all ripened at the same time, you’d have got tummy ache.)
